Honister takes Silver
At Visit England 2012 National Awards.
Honister Slate Mine, Borrowdale, Keswick attended the prestigious Visit England Awards in Leicester last night. Their hugely popular Via Ferrata mountain adventure was nominated for “Visitor Experience of the Year” 2012. Created over 4.5 years ago by Mine Owner Mark Weir, this was the very first commercial Via Ferrata in the UK.
Since opening, thousands of visitors to The Lake District have enjoyed the challenge of this unique experience and the Judging panel of tourism experts referred to the large volume of very positive consumer feedback within the submission.
Owner Jan Wilkinson said “This award acknowledges the very creation of the Via Ferrata by my late partner Mark. But also the team of staff who engage with our visitors, delivering an iconic, revitalizing experience all year round, that let the guest (participant) gain such a sense of achievement that lasts forever.”
Cumbria Tourism Chief Executive Ian Stephens also commented ‘’ Honister’s success at the Visit England Awards for Excellence is no surprise. Honister must be the most spectacular visitor attraction in the UK and provides fun for all the family as well as offering a thrilling adrenalin rush for those more daring. The award also demonstrates the sheer hard work and determination of the team throughout the year and is a shining example of the quality of the outdoor activity on offer in the Lake District, Cumbria, the UK’s Adventure Capital.’’
After a unanimous decision by the Lake District National Park Authority Planning Board to pass Honister`s plans for 2 brand new Via Ferrata products,
Via Ferrata Classic and Via Ferrata Xtreme,work is well under way to have these up and running by June 1st.
